8th July 08 'Climate change, peak oil and rising food prices: new challenges for African conflict?

With soaring food prices triggering riots in Egypt, climate change threatening increased population displacement and the world's growing demand for energy caught up with both, are these interlinked issues the new challenges to conflict prevention in Africa? If so, what could and should the international community - including the UK - do to address the problem? The speakers will assess the dimensions of these risks and provide an overview on how the international community perceives them, as well as how they are currently responding.

18 March 2008 - 'Hamas: Time to Talk?'
Gabrielle Rifkind, Human Security Consultant of the Oxford Research Group, and Scilla Elworthy, founder of the Oxford Research Group and of Peace Direct, are co-authors of Making Terrorism History, based on their extensive work in Israel-Palestine and Iraq.  Gabrielle Rifkind has met with Hamas on several occasions over the last two years.
 
27 February 2008 - 'How can we avoid future oil wars? Oil depletion and US-UK foreign policy'

Professor Paul Rogers, Bradford University and the Oxford Research Group, and Professor Mary Kaldor, LSE and author of 'Oil Wars', will explore the current status of the military dimension of Britain's oil security strategy. The meeting will also look at ways in which the UK can work to avoid future involvement in oil-related conflict.

This is a joint event with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil and Gas  (APPGOPO).
