On the afternoon of 28 January, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will jointly host an international ministerial conference on the future of Afghanistan in London. This conference comes at a critical juncture for Afghanistan. It is hoped to be key in determining the scale and direction of the international community’s engagement in the country, but to succeed several important domestic and regional issues need to be addressed.
The half-day meeting jointly hosted by Carnegie and the APPG on Conflict Issues takes place on the morning of the Prime Minister’s conference. Informed by the insights of Western and Afghan experts, it aims to provide a public forum to re-launch the debate on the critical issues facing Afghanistan. Key questions to be addressed include the realistic political strategy options within Obama’s 18-month timeline and the prospects for a realistic regional strategy for the stabilisation of Afghanistan.
